Literature Text

He sat quietly on the bench overlooking the beach, ears enjoing the swish and sway of the waves on the sand. He leaned back, hands behind his head, as he stared up into the night sky. Mind wandering through the dark halls within his subconscious, he allowed himself to drift into a state of rest, zoning out into the blackness of the sky. His eyes closed, stars blinking out of existance and the light from the moon fading. All that was left was the smell of the sea and the swish of the waves.

His mind wandered deeper, finding every cobweb and orphaned thought and sending them whirling around his mind like bees around a hive. Hopes, dreams, aspirations, memories, fears, loves, nightmares--they hovered around him, making the air thick and dank with their presence. Chest expanding, he drew in a breath, deep and full, and with the exhale, let those unwanted thoughts drift away on the breeze coming off the sea. In and out, there then gone--the depths of his mind unraveled itself and expelled the unwanted until finally, he exhaled one last time and opened his eyes again. Sitting up slightly, he looked forward to the sea and smiled. "Love you," he set down the flowers on the bench below a bronze plaque and walked away.
